ALTERED STATES IN THERAPY
Exploring Consciousness with Curiosity and Care
I think of mythology as the homeland of the muses, the inspirers of art, the inspirers of poetry. To see life as a poem and yourself participating in a poem is what the myth does for you.
-Joseph Campbell
Altered states can be profound teachers.
They might arise through meditation, breathwork, dreams or, for some clients, through legally-sourced psilocybin experiences undertaken privately.
Heather’s role is not to supply or facilitate those experiences, but to help you prepare for and integrate them so that insight becomes lasting growth.

The experience is the spark; understanding what it means is the flame.

Working with Altered States in Therapy
-
Preparation. Before any altered-state exploration, we clarify intention, expectations and emotional readiness. You’ll learn grounding practices, safety planning and ways to approach the experience with respect and mindfulness. This ensures the experience will support healing rather than confusion or being overwhelmed.
-
Independent Experience. If you choose to engage with an altered state, whether through psilocybin privately, intensive meditation or another spiritual practice, Heather will not participate in or supervise the event. Their focus is on the before and after, in the preparation and integration, helping you to understand your motivation in the preparation work and then integrating what unfolds afterward.
-
Integration. After the experience, you will meet together to process insights, visions, dreams and emotions. You will use talk therapy, dreamwork and symbolic exploration to translate meaning into daily life. Integration closes the loop between the extraordinary and ordinary.

Why Work with a Therapist Around Altered States?
Altered states often open the door to powerful insights within oneself - emotional, archetypal or spiritual. Without support, these insights can feel unanchored. Therapeutic guidance can provide:
-
psychological safety and containment
-
help discerning what is insight vs. what is impulse
-
tools for grounding and embodiment
-
continued growth after the experience

Is this Approach for You?
You may find benefit if:
-
you plan to explore psilocybin privately and want ethical, psychological support
-
you are drawn to dream or symbol work as part of healing
-
you have already had an altered-state experience and want to “unpack” it
-
you seek spiritual or creative integration beyond traditional talk therapy
This work does not require ongoing substance use or external guidance. Get in touch today and schedule your free consultation.
